Memorial Day Weekend

Ahhh…. Memorial Day Weekend.  The official kickoff to SUMMER!

Doesn’t this picnic look heavenly?!

We tend to pack this three-day weekend full of BBQs, picnics, camping, friends, family and if we’re lucky, a whole lot of sunshine. And maybe even some awesome discount shopping (hint hint – sale at Stuff this weekend).

But it’s also a little more than that.

And this weekend we remember those we’ve loved and lost and those that serve.

We salute you!

Inspired by Allie… Be More Bold

This year I decided to challenge myself to do something new: to be more bold. So of course, since I’m a girl, I started in the clothes department. I’m talking bold colors, bold prints and especially bold accessories. Now, for some clarification, you will not see me walking around town with green nails, purple shorts, pink leggings, a shirt decorated in unicorns with a floatie around my waist. That indeed would be bold, but not quite what I’m going for. Rather, I’m thinking fun printed shirts, brightly colored shorts and cute hats or other accessories like earrings, necklaces, etc. It seems to me these days that color is everything. With my new “be bold” splurge, I went to the Stuff Etc in Coralville with my eyes craving things that stood out. Within the first 5 minutes I found a pair of baby blue shorts…they even had the original tags still attached! Since I only paid $5.99 for these sweet shorts, I assured myself I must find a shirt to go with it. In my heart of hearts I knew the nice summer weather was soon to arrive so I went looking for a light tank top. I topped these shorts off with a beaming, bright orange shirt that was $4.99. Now if this shirt isn’t bold, I do not know what is.

Wrapped up in the word ‘bold’ is all sorts of excitement: it means vivid, courageous, daring. So, with my new bold outfit on, I’m going out on an adventure, not sure what is awaiting me. Dr. Seuss says, “If you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good!” No one likes boring, do they? Don’t let your outfit be plain; throw some color into it! The real pickle comes when you want a radical outfit, but you know that if you buy it you will not be able to wear it out because you’ve spent all your money on the outfit and have none leftover to go out on the town. This is why Stuff Etc is so perfect for me:  I can get several cute outfits AND be able to wear them out with money left over.

This summer I encourage you to try something new, do things you normally would not and wear things that make your outfit noticeable and exciting. Decorate your life just how you like it. Be edgy, not sketchy. Colorful, not mix matched. And be bold, not boring. Now if you’ll excuse me…I need to go put together some more outfits!

One Week, One Carry-on?! Really?!

This is an all-too-familiar scene for me!  I am the CLASSIC over-packer! Seriously! How am I suppose to know what I might feel like wearing day three in Paris?  I pack what I think would be perfect while I’m standing in my living room, but then I start to play out the what-ifs:  “what if we end up doing something else?”, or “what if the weather is unseasonably cool?”, or “what if I drank too much wine the night before and I’m super bloated the next morning and then the adorable shorts that I packed while standing in my living room three days ago won’t really fit”? …yea, then what?

Well, I found some fabulous tips in the June 2011 issue of Lucky magazine that has helped even the chronic over-packing abuser make it work in one carry-on.  Here’s a couple of tips that I found to be the most helpful:  1) Pick a palettetwo neutrals plus a standout color – makes mixing and matching a total breeze.  2) Two pairs of shoeswho are we kidding? This was the hardest! Neutral/tan wedges, heels or sandals are the stand out trend for the summer and you can wear them with everything! And don’t forget to include the shoes you’re wearing on the plane to work with what you packed  3) ROLL – don’t fold – your clothes; this means fewer creases and more room – I thought this was a myth, but totally TRUE! 4) Plan to wear your bulkier layer on the planeit won’t take up space in your luggage and you’ll need it when the cabin is chilly.

Perfect example of what to pack:

or…

Well… what do you think? Can it really be done? Guess I will soon find out! I promise to fill you in on my results when I return and let you know how “day three” really turned out with my new minimalist & travel savvy approach.

p.s. I’m not really going to Paris… sad face… it’s just a business trip,                    but a girl can dream, right?

Not A Morning Person

I’m not exactly a morning person.  Strike that.  I’m definitely not a morning person. But today was another eventful 5:30 morning and I was feeling a little dreary. These are usually the mornings where I throw on some sweats (if I’m lucky, they match) and run out the door. Since the weather has been so cold, I still feel the need to bundle up but I wasn’t feeling another pair of tight jeans and an itchy sweater. And, since I’ve worn sweats for the past week it seems, I thought I’d change it up.

I opened my closet, did some digging and found a spring dress I had purchased just a week ago from the Stuff Etc Coralville store. It was colorful, comfortable, trendy and only 7 bucks! I spiced it up with a pair of bright yellow MIA sandals that I paid a whopping 9 bucks for and threw on a turquoise sweater for warmth. Not only was my outfit comfortable, but all those colors made the deep, dark circles around my eyes disappear. Of course, the coffee helped with that one, too.  It was a win-win kind of day.
